To get started, patients can begin by contact Clayton Plastic Surgery located in Midvale, Utah and request their private consultation today.

What is a Body Lift?

A body lift is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin from the body to improve definition and overall contour of their body. This procedure can be broken down into two surgeries – an upper body lift and a lower body lift; patients can undergo one or both depending on the individual. Body lifts are frequently performed on men and women who have lost a significant amount of weight, either through diet and exercise or bariatric surgery.

This procedure will help shape and tone, allowing the skin and underlying tissue to reach its best contour.

Most commonly, patients will opt for a lower body lift. For this procedure, the skin is excised, lifted, and tightened on the abdomen, lower back, buttocks, and thighs. However, Dr. Clayton can also perform an upper body lift to address the arms, breasts, and upper back.

Good Candidates

Body lift candidates

Good candidates for a body lift are men and women who have lost a significant amount of weight, about 100 lbs., and are looking to correct skin laxity that has been left behind as a result. Depending on the patient, they may experience excess skin on their upper or lower body. An initial consultation will be required to allow Dr. Clayton to determine the best course of action. In general, the patient should be in good health and have realistic expectations for the procedure outcomes. In the case that the patient requires an upper and lower body lift, the doctor recommends that these two procedures be performed separately to allow the body to heal well.

For those who are considering this procedure, a body lift does not remove fat from the body; it only corrects skin laxity. Patients that have excess fat on the body may not be a candidate for this procedure. In some cases, liposuction can be performed in conjunction with the body lift for the optimal results. For patients who are interested in reviewing their body lift options, please contact Clayton Plastic Surgery in Midvale, Utah and request a consultation.

Body Lift Techniques

Clayton Plastic Surgery offers different body lift procedures to correct skin laxity on all regions of the body. Upon evaluation of the patient, the doctor can recommend which technique would be best, depending on their particular needs.

Lower Body Lift

A lower body lift, also known as a belt lipectomy, corrects skin laxity throughout the bottom half of the body. Dr. Clayton performs several procedures combined into one to offer comprehensive results. This method removes excess skin throughout the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks.

Upper Body Lift

An upper body lift addresses only the upper half of the body. After weight loss, patients may be left with a considerable amount of skin on the top portion of their bodies, which Dr. Clayton uses a specific combination of procedures to correct. For this surgery, he performs an arm lift, back lift, and either a breast lift or a gynecomastia procedure depending on if the patient is male or female.

Preparation

To adequately prepare for a body lift procedure, Dr. Clayton provides his patients with a list of preparatory instructions. Some of these guidelines include:

  • Avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications for two weeks
  • Quit smoking three weeks before surgery
  • Arrange for a ride home after the procedure
  • Set up a “recovery friendly” home

During the consultation, the doctor will provide any additional instructions specific to the patient’s individual case.

Procedure

A body lift is a very customizable procedure, meaning that no two surgeries will be the same. The techniques and methods chosen for this operation will be decided during the initial consultation. Before beginning the procedure, Dr. Clayton will make the necessary incision marks on the body to ensure accuracy during the procedure. Our certified anesthesiologist will administer the general anesthesia, and once the patient is asleep, the doctor can proceed.

If liposuction is being included as an additionalprocedure, the doctor will perform liposuction first.

He will make the necessary entry incisions around the desired treatment area, through which he will insert a cannula. A cannula is a thin tube that uses high power suction to remove the fat from the body. Once an adequate amount of fat has been removed, he will then begin the body lift process. Depending on the procedure, upper body lift or lower body lift, the incisions will be made accordingly.

He will remove the excess tissue and join the remaining skin, providing a smoother, more firm shape.

Once the excess skin has been removed, Dr. Clayton will close the incisions using sutures and the body will be wrapped in surgical bandages and compression garments. The patient will then be taken to the recovery area to rest as they slowly wake from the anesthesia. The doctor may place drains inside the incisions before closing them to catch any surgical fluid. The drains will be removed during the first post-op visit.

Recovery

Body Lift Recovery

Once in the recovery area, the patient will be monitored by our nursing staff for several hours before being released to continue their recovery process in the comfort of their own home. Dr. Clayton has a set of postoperative instructions that he advises his patients follow after their procedure to promote optimal healing.

Patients are recommended to briefly walk the evening of surgery to reduce the risk of clotting and increase blood circulation throughout the body. It is vital that the patient wears the provided compression garments throughout the majority of the healing process, as it will help to reduce swelling and bruising. The patient will be asked to return for several post-operative appointments so that Dr. Clayton can track the healing process.

The recovery lengths will vary depending on the body’s ability to heal.

In general, patients will need to take two to three weeks off of work or other daily routines. More strenuous activities should be avoided for a minimum of six to eight weeks. During this time, patients may feel pain or discomfort. Dr. Clayton will provide patients with a prescription for pain medication to help alleviate any discomfort felt while healing. If patients have any further questions during this time, we encourage them to speak with our knowledgeable and friendly staff. They are here to assist in any way they can.

Results

Results of a body lift can be seen instantly; however, they will be hidden under the compression garments initially.

The long-term and final results can be seen after a few months once the swelling and bruising have significantly reduced or subsided completely. Patients will experience an increase in confidence, seeing a noticeable difference in the way their clothes fit and how they feel when wearing them. Dr. Clayton has provided amazing results for his previous body lift patients, leaving them very satisfied with their new figures

It is important that patients keep a healthy diet and exercise regime after their procedure to ensure lasting results. Although this process provides a more toned figure, it does not prevent weight gain.

Consultation

During the initial consultation, Dr. Clayton will have a conversation with the patient about their cosmetic concerns are and what results they are looking to achieve with a body lift. To ensure that this procedure is a safe option for the patient, the doctor will review the patient’s medical history, mainly looking at their current health conditions, routine medications, and any previous surgeries

The doctor will then perform a physical examination of the patient not only to identify their concerns but also to build a custom treatment plan to help the patient achieve their desired results.

If the patient requires additional or alternative treatments to reach their goal, these possible procedure options can be discussed in detail during this time. We ask that patients come to the consultation with any and all questions regarding the body lift procedure and or any concerns they may have. Dr. Clayton is happy to answer any questions and keep patients informed as best he can. To meet one-on-one with the doctor, we encourage patients to call Clayton Plastic Surgery today and set up a consultation.

Cost

The cost of a body lift will vary from patient to patient. The price will ultimately depend on the extent of treatment that is needed and if any additional procedures will be performed, such as liposuction. During the consultation, Dr. Clayton will work with patients to construct an individualized procedure plan based on their particular goals. This plan will help the doctor provide patients with an accurate procedure quote. Contact our office today and request a private consultation with Dr. David Clayton today!
