About Fat Transfer
Excess fat can be transformed from a nuisance to an opportunity to naturally augment and restore a sense of flattering proportion to your figure. As a safe procedure, you can feel good about a fat transfer surgery – which are often chosen for their more natural and long-lasting appearance after the procedure.
The process of fat transfer, known alternatively as fat grafting, is three-part.
Fat transfer refers to a type of procedure that harvests fat from one part of the body using liposuction and then repurposes that fat to improve the appearance and volume of another part of the body. The process begins with fat being liposuctioned from an area of concern, like your thighs or abdomen area. Then, the extracted fat from that area is placed through a purification process. This process helps to remove any unwanted ingredients, so the fat is in its purest form. The fat is then injected into the area of your body that you would like to appear more full, such as your breasts, buttocks, or even the lips.
The three most common fat transfer procedures are a Brazilian Butt Lift, natural breast augmentation, and hand rejuvenation.
In some cases, a fat transfer can also be used to add volume to the face, including the cheeks and lips. Fat transfer procedures have the added benefit of allowing patients to sculpt parts of their bodies with their own natural volumizing material.
We can correct problem areas that your squats, lunges, sit-ups, cardio and other forms of exercise can’t do for you, all while adding curves in places you want them most. Please contact our office and schedule a consultation with Dr. Clayton to see if this procedure is right for you.
Common Fat Transfer Procedures
Get ready to go from avoiding pictures to taking every photo opportunity you can get with these four most popular procedural options, including Brazilian Butt Lift, Natural Breast Augmentation, Hand Rejuvenation, and Facial Fat Transfer. Dr. Clayton is one of Utah’s finest as a member of the Utah Plastic Surgery Society, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
Brazilian Butt Lift
You don’t need to use synthetic filler or implants to get that hourglass silhouette you’ve always wanted! Along with giving patients voluptuous behinds, this common procedure can also reduce love handles, as fat is frequently taken from the lower back and gives a flattering size contrast between your middle section and your buttocks. A Brazilian Butt Lift is great for women who are looking to slim down one area of the body while also increasing the size and shape of the buttocks.
Natural Breast Augmentation
If you’re looking for a realistic feel and a moderate increase in the appearance of your breasts, fat transfer (fat grafting) is a great alternative to the use of implants. Natural breast augmentation is ideal for women who are looking for a mild increase in breast size, about one to two cup sizes. For patients that are looking to enlarge their breasts significantly, they may be better suited for a breast augmentation that utilizes implants. Dr. Clayton and his team will provide expert advice but ultimately proceed with the best procedure to help you achieve your goals.
While dermal fillers are a common choice to fill in wrinkles and restore more youthful fullness, they are far from permanent. Fillers often last about a year or less, and even if you restore volume, those results are lost within that time frame and require recurrent treatment. Through the use of fat grafting and using your body’s own organic material, the results are longer-lasting, providing smooth, youthful results.
Facial Fat Transfer
Restoring a youthful facial aesthetic by filling wrinkles and fine lines, such as crow’s feet or nasolabial folds, naturally is now possible with the help of fat transfer. Facial fat transfer allows you to take your unwanted fat and repurpose it into the face to reverse certain signs of aging or enhance a particular feature such as the lips. Dr. Clayton and his associates will review your best options based on your facial concerns and help devise a treatment plan to meet your needs.
About Donor Locations
Dr. Clayton will work with you to decide which area of your body is the most viable source of excess fat deposits for the procedure. The region of the donor site will need to have an adequate amount of fat that can be safely obtained through a liposuction procedure. The areas that are most commonly chosen as donor sites include the outer thighs, inner thighs, back, hips, flanks, abdomen, and upper arms.
Fat transfer candidates should be in good overall health and maintain a steady weight. Patients who are considering fat grafting procedures should be looking to augment a certain region of the body naturally but should not be using this procedure as a form of weight loss.
Having realistic expectations sets the foundation for a successful procedure of naturally augmenting problem areas including the hands, face, breasts, buttocks, and others. Patients who keep a healthy lifestyle after the procedure will often have the longest-lasting results. To find out if you are an ideal candidate for one of our fat transfer procedures, please contact Clayton plastic Surgery today and request a consultation.
The Fat Transfer Procedure
The three-part process of the fat transfer procedure is done under general anesthesia and you will be able to return home once the surgery is complete.
To begin the fat transfer procedure, Dr. Clayton will make an incision near the donor site. He will use this to retrieve a small amount of fat by inserting a thin cannula into the incision and using high power suction; the fat will be safely extracted. For the second step of the procedure, the doctor will place the fat sample into a centrifuge which will separate any liquid from the solid fat to obtain a purified form of the fat that is ready to be injected into another region of the body. Dr. Clayton will then place the fat into a syringe and inject it into the area of concern to provide the needed augmentation. The purifying the injected fat helps to ensure that the cells have the highest likelihood of surviving and creating their own blood supply.
Once the physician has achieved the desired results, he will close any open incisions and wrap both the donor site and augmented region in compression garments.
We will provide you with care instructions that will help you navigate your recovery.
Common experiences from a fat transfer procedure include swelling and bruising, both of which are expected to decrease significantly if not entirely in one to two weeks. Keeping pressure off of the augmented area and keeping a compression garment on at all times will help to ensure proper healing and optimal results. We recommend walking around the evening after your procedure to help improve blood flow throughout the body and reduce any risk of clotting. During this time, if you have any questions or concerns, we encourage you to speak with one of our knowledgeable and helpful staff members.
