About Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers provide a smooth, natural appearance and last about 9 to 12 months depending on the particular treatment area. For long-term results, maintained treatment will be required.

A dermal filler is an injectable soft tissue filler that diminishes wrinkles and adds youthful volume to the face and back of the hands. The product itself is a sterile gel that is injected under the skin to enhance certain features. The treatment itself is quick and provides instantaneous results, allowing men and women to obtain a more youthful look without lengthy downtime. The two dermal fillers Dr. Clayton has chosen to offer his patients are Juvederm and Restylane. Both of these fillers are hyaluronic acid based fillers, which is a product that is naturally found in the body’s biological makeup.

What Do They Treat?

Dermal fillers can be used to treat an array of cosmetic concerns on the face, neck, and hands. Below are some of the conditions that dermal fillers are best used to treat:

  • Nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the mouth)
  • Marionette lines (lines from the mouth to the chin)
  • Lines above the upper lip
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead creases
  • Thin lips
  • Sunken cheeks
  • Hollowed contours like temples
  • Prominent veins on the backs of the hands

Types of Dermal Fillers

There are a wide variety of dermal fillers on the market today; however, Dr. Clayton has narrowed down the lot to provide his patients with his most highly recommended fillers to ensure that his patients receive the best results. Both the FDA approved dermal fillers that are offered at Clayton Plastic Surgery are listed in detail below:

Juvederm

Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid based filler, and it is one of the most commonly used fillers on the market today. Juvederm is used to reduce wrinkles and add volume to the lips, temples, and cheeks. Additionally, this filler can be used for a non-surgical nose job and hand rejuvenation. Juvederm’s texture is smooth which makes it ideal for fine lines and smaller treatment areas.

Restylane

Also a hyaluronic acid based filler, Restylane is similar to Juvederm. It too adds volume and reduces wrinkles and creases on the face, neck, and hands, but its consistency is thicker. This makes it more ideal for larger treatment areas as Dr. Clayton can physically mold the solution into the desired contour.

Dermal Fillers Vs. Fat Transfer

Dermal fillers vs fat transfer

Dermal fillers and fat transfer procedures are both used to improve a person’s contour but the methods in which they obtain these results are quite different. Dermal fillers, as stated above, use a gel-like material that adds volume to a designated area on either the face, neck, or hands. Dermal fillers are very beneficial at providing instant results with virtually no downtime; however, this treatment cannot be used for larger areas of the body to provide body contouring enhancements.

A fat transfer procedure, in comparison, can be used for most areas of the body. Fat transfer, otherwise known as fat grafting, is a surgical procedure that uses liposuction to remove excess fat from one area of the body and repurposes the cells to another area of the body that is lacking volume otherwise. In short, this means you can take fat from their own body and use it to correct concerns of aging and volume loss that would otherwise be done with dermal fillers.

The most popular fat transfer procedures include facial fat transfer, fat transfer breast augmentation, Brazilian Butt Lift, and hand rejuvenation.

There is not one treatment that is better than the other; it depends on the concerns, the treatment areas, how much downtime you can afford, and how quickly you wish to receive the results. Both of these treatments are very beneficial for providing natural-looking results. During the initial consultation with Dr. Clayton, he will review the patient’s particular case and recommend the best course of action based on their goals.

Who is a Candidate?

Because dermal fillers are nonsurgical, mostly all men and women are considered candidates. The patients considering this treatment option should not have any underlying skin conditions and should have reasonable expectations of the overall results. Patients should make sure they have no allergies to any of the ingredients in either of the fillers to prevent any complications from occurring. Those who are looking into receiving this treatment should want to reduce the signs of aging or are wanting to add volume and/or enhance certain facial features.

It is important to note that dermal fillers are not a replacement for surgical procedures. Although they do provide temporary cosmetic improvement, this treatment does not tighten extremely lax or droopy skin. For patients who experience excess skin, alternative treatment may be required to attain the desired results, such as facelift, brow lift, or neck lift.

Consultation

During the initial consultation, Dr. Clayton will ask you what your particular concerns are and your desired outcome. He will then conduct a brief medical evaluation to review any necessary medical history, routine medications, and ensure that this treatment will be a safe and beneficial option for you. After this, Dr. Clayton will perform an examination to identify your concerns and construct a treatment plan based on your individual needs. Dermal filler treatment can usually be performed on the same day as the consultation if you are found to be a good candidate.

Patients are able to receive treatment and immediately get back to their busy schedules without missing a beat.

The Dermal Filler Treatment Process

Treatment is often performed during the consultation visit if the patient desires. Before beginning the treatment, Dr. Clayton will identify the particular areas that are of concern and choose the best filler to provide the optimal results. Through his years of experience, the doctor has developed specialized techniques that will aid him in providing natural-looking results. Once the doctor has achieved your cosmetic goals, you are free to go and return to their daily routines.

After the Treatment

Although there is no real downtime and you are free to return to your daily routine, there is what we like to call “social downtime”. After treatment is complete, you may experience pinpoint bleeding in the treatment area. This is normal and will subside within a few hours. You may also experience initial redness and slight swelling which will quickly go away.

When receiving dermal fillers or other injections, mild bruising may occur during healing. For this reason, we recommend that you receive treatment about 1 week prior to any social event to ensure healing is complete. It is also recommended that you refrain from any strenuous activity for 24 hours following injections to help prevent avoidable bruising.

Results

Results from dermal fillers can be seen instantly; however, you will be able to see the final outcome about 4-6 days after treatment. The results of both Juvederm and Restylane last on average 9-12 months. Long-lasting results can be achieved through recurring treatments.

Additional or Alternative Treatments

In order to receive comprehensive facial rejuvenation treatments, patients have the ability to add additional procedures to their treatment session. The most common treatments that are used in conjunction with dermal fillers are Botox and Dysport

It is never too soon to receive Botox or Dysport treatments to aid in the aging process.

Botox and Dysport are both neurotoxins that are formulated to target the underlying facial muscles to reduce muscle contractions. Over time, these muscles contractions that create facial expressions cause the facial skin to begin to become lax. This loose skin leads to lines, creases, and wrinkles like smile lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines. Botox and Dysport work to combat this issue by reducing the muscle movement when making facial expressions. This treatment, when injected into the muscle, blocks the signals being sent from the brain instructing the muscle movements; ultimately preventing the skin from creasing and becoming loose. Many men and women find this treatment very beneficial to perform in addition to dermal fillers. It is never too soon to receive Botox or Dysport treatments to aid in the aging process.

Cost

The cost of dermal fillers varies from person to person depending on their particular concerns and how many injections will be required to achieve your aesthetic goals. During the initial consultation, you and Dr. Clayton together will construct a treatment plan tailored to their specific needs. Once this has been done, the doctor will be able to provide a personalized dermal filler quote.
